Hard work can be considered as Scalar Quantity .It may have a high magnitude but have no direction. Working hard in the wrong direction will take you no where but will just end waste your huge lot of time and efforts. For example: you are dedicated to complete full syllabus before exams and burned out before completing it full. If in exams you got maximum questions from the left over syllabus then whole your hard work will be a waste.

Smart Work:-
Smart work can or can not be considered as Vector Quantity. It do have direction for sure, but the required magnitude of force varies. For example: as in previous case, you may do lots of question papers before exams, but there's no surety that the same questions from previous year will repeat this year too. So, you can't rely on smart work every time.
